Preschool | Ages 3-5

Preschool at Roaring Mouse Creative Arts Studio is a place for children to grow, learn, play, and create. Our preschool philosophy borrows from a range of respected, diverse educational approaches with an emphasis on play and social-emotional development.

We offer a dynamic arts-based morning preschool program from September through June for children ages three to five years old. Our program is taught by a team of two experienced artist-teachers and has a maximum of sixteen students. The classroom is further supported by our education director who visits the classroom regularly, leads weekly creative movement classes, and provides ongoing mentorship on development needs, curriculum and classroom design.

We are firm believers in the power of observation, emergent curriculum, and empowering students to explore their passions and pursue that which piques their curiosity. Our teachers observe and reflect upon what students are most drawn to exploring and plan daily experiences accordingly, providing the tools and materials needed to honor and expand upon those topics. We combine this with a strong social-emotional component based on practices developed by RM founder, Lassie Webster, and Second Step*, a curriculum designed by Committee for Children.

At Roaring Mouse our teaching philosophy is rooted in a deep respect for children and the transformative power of their play. We view children as creative and capable learners who are each valued members of our community and from whom we all have much to learn. We utilize an emergent curriculum that is designed to meet the needs of preschool children for creative play, social interaction, reflection and learning. Our class time is devoted to three main areas: Creative Learning (choice of play and visual arts activities), Cooperative Community (social and emotional skills, small and large group time) and Performance Arts (dance, music, drama, story-telling, play-writing). Throughout these areas, we offer children the opportunity and challenge to work together on collaborative, in-depth, inquiry based projects and studies as much as possible. Ideas for these projects are collected through teacher observations based on the children’s questions and interests demonstrated in play, conversation and art. It is our ultimate goal to offer our students a dynamic and purposeful approach to pursuing curiosity, knowledge and self-expression.

Roaring Mouse has been a home away from home for preschool students and their families for over 20 years. We think it’s a very special place and can’t wait to share it with you and your child.

*Second Step teaches skills in the core areas of empathy, emotion management and social problem solving.
