after school classes

Classes held during the school year (September – June):

Open Studio

Welcome to OPEN STUDIO at Roaring Mouse, a class for children ages 4-8 years old to explore and expand their imagination and art skills through a variety of mediums. In this playful and exciting class, students will work on a balance of “Artist Choice”* and projects designed by Cheryl to build skills and generate new ideas. Students may choose to play in our playroom during Artist Choice time. During our project time all students come together in a teacher led activity involving either painting, collage, drawing, or sculpture. Please be prepared to transport wet projects if only visiting for the day — a large flat box works best (for example, copy paper box lids, fruit flat boxes).

This new program features the parent-friendly option of signing up for just one class or an entire session (Tuesdays and/or Thursdays).

*Artist Choice is a favorite activity of many of the children who participate in classes at Roaring Mouse Children have access to a variety of materials, many of them recycled, to create their own projects. Teachers find it fascinating to watch the children’s approach to creating as it involves many skills outside the artistic range — critical thinking, science, and mathematical skills are just a few. Teachers also encourage children to share their thinking process which often inspires other children to incorporate those ideas into their projects as well. We often have very detailed and interesting conversations around the Artist Choice table.

This program offers a unique opportunity for children to not only participate in classes but to begin training as an assistant teacher. Working with our beloved Roaring Mouse teacher, Cheryl Carder, the apprentices will attend classes for younger children, dividing their time between creating their own pieces and helping younger students with their projects as well. They will be encouraged to contribute their ideas for projects and classroom activities. Apprentices will assist the teacher with children in age appropriate ways for their skill level, as well as set up/clean up and snack. Classes in which Art Apprentices assist currently include Kids’ Night Out & Open Studio. There is only one apprentice spot per class.

Cost: 1/2 tuition for classes attending as apprentices. Further training classes and opportunities may be available, on a case by case basis. If you would like to find out more about this opportunity, please let us know here.

*Art Apprentices who successfully participate in this program may apply for a paid assistant teaching position at the age of 14.
